Expenses and Taxes
Acting is a business.
The government allows you to write off acting expenses up to the income
you earned through acting.
Be sure to keep records of anything remotely related to acting and consult
your tax adviser for additional information about your deductions. Save
your receipts, invoices, stubs, etc. Below is a list of possible deductions:
- Mailing
labels and mailing expenses
- Headshots
(photographer's fees and printing costs)
- Resume
(duplication costs)
- Acting
classes, seminars, and workshops (ask for an invoice or receipt)
- Travel
expenses to and from auditions (standard mileage deduction)
- Meal
and lodging expenses incurred while working as an actor
- Acting
books
- Telephone
bills (including the cost of cell phone)
- Clothing
and makeup used for acting
- Dry
cleaning expenses and office supplies
- Demo
tapes
- DVD
rentals and admissions to movies and plays
- Union
dues
Remember, any deductible
expenses must be used exclusively for acting career. Consult your tax
adviser for additional information about your deductions.
